CHAPTER EIGHT

The knot in Cathy’s stomach relaxed, and she smothered a sigh of relief. The tension of Canelli’s visit hadn’t completely dissipated, and while remnants of resentment at Linc’s interference lingered, she realized she’d wasted nearly a whole evening sulking. And here he was, announcing that he would be back Saturday morning.

Her mind sorted the possibilities as they left the restaurant. Basketball necessitated an awful lot of physical contact. She intended to make the most of it.

“I didn’t realize you were coming Saturday, Linc,” she said as the Seville prowled through the convoluted series of streets leading away from Simon’s office. “Don’t you have to work?”

“If you’re attempting to make me feel unwelcome, you’re not succeeding.” His voice was light and cheerful. All she could see was his profile as he concentrated on the traffic. “I can’t allow you to continue to terrorize those high school boys. They might get the idea they’re inferior if a woman intimidates them at what they consider their own sport.”

“I didn’t realize you were so humanitarian.”

“You underestimate me. In many ways.” The traffic light burnished one side of his face. “How can I stay mentally fit if I don’t find some physical outlet for my aggression?”

“You could play handball with Simon. Poor Marybeth’s enthusiasm level is pretty low,” she said cheerfully.

“That’s Simon’s idea of courting. I wouldn’t take that away from him.”

Cathy grinned. “Simon’s really mixed up. He’d do better to convince Marybeth she’s more attractive with those few extra pounds.” When Linc didn’t respond, Cathy rested her head on the back of the seat, closed her eyes and pondered the confusing state of her assistant’s romance. The exercise was easier than examining the confusing state of her own emotions.

As the car rolled to a stop next to hers, Cathy turned to him. “Thank you so much for dinner, Linc. When I got your free legal expertise and fatherly advice this afternoon I never expected a free meal, too.”

She hadn’t been able to resist the sarcastic comment, but knew she’d gone too far when the light from the dash revealed the tightening of his jaw. Recklessly, she took it one step further. Leaning over, she pressed a light kiss on his check, then retreated quickly and reached for the door handle in the same move. “Good night, Uncle Linc.”

Her move would have worked if his reflexes hadn’t been lightning quick. The automatic lock clicked as her fingers touched the handle. She tugged at it fruitlessly. His hands gripped her shoulders, drawing her away from a lost cause.

“Make up your mind what you’re punishing me for, Cathy,” he growled before he kissed her.

The intensity of the kiss infuriated Cathy. A sharp skitter of fear danced across her nerve endings. No one had ever dared treat her like this! Hands doubled into fists, she pounded helplessly against his rigid shoulders, making no headway against his determined assault. Suddenly his lips softened against hers.

The gentling made her go limp. His hands released her, his forehead coming to rest at the juncture of her neck and shoulder.
