Yoshiâs Fountains
Sue Lee, Kane, and Jane were walking down the hill to Finns for coffee; Sue Lee had told the two of them her theory about Yoshi generated the two clues in a sequence to cover or reveal the whereabouts of the missing sword.
âThat is a plausible explanation, but why a Chinese fountain? It proves the priest was a phony and knew little about Japanese culture; itâs puzzling?â Kane said, turning to the side as the path widened so they all could walk together.
âI have a question. Sue Lee. You told me your uncle was on his way to Tomales Bay on the day of his accident, perhaps to buy oysters? Kane said John Kim had a home on the bay. What if Yoshi was not buying oysters and on his way to see John? Itâs just a thought, but what if Yoshi, the Chinese fountain, John Kim, and Mr. Yin are all connected somehow?â
âJohn Kim had few friends, do you know if he got along with Yoshi?â Kane asked as they were walking across the driveway to Finnâs restaurant.
âYes, a while back, he bought a few Asian items from John for his collection. Yoshi told me John had a superb collection. I, too, helped with a sale to John a few years ago.â
âKane, is it possible to visit his home. Oh, Mary is waving us to come down to the dock,â Jane said.
âI know his sister Kate, and she will be at his house today. The paper mentioned they were planning to have the wake their next week. Maybe after breakfast, we should go for a ride and pay our respects. If this weather holds, I would also like to see where the body was found at Point Reyes.â
Kane followed the girls down the stairs to join Mary. She helped Finn and John take out a few things from their shed that John may need on the farm. She insisted it would give them more space, but Sue Lee knew she was welcoming John into their small community.
Everyone pitched in and loading the pickup; Mary left to start breakfast in the cafe that was closed on Christmas Day, except for family and friends.
At first, Sue Lee was reluctant to enter the shed, afraid it would bring back Yoshiâs sad memories. Finn had stored his wrecked truck in there after the accident, but Finn whispered in her ear. âGo on in Sue Lee; itâs all gone. I salvage what I could use and sold the rest.â
After the truck was full, and John pretended he had no place to sit, they all went back inside to look at his fountain.
âAye, John, this is a grand job of welding. You have a talent with a torch, boy, you must have made a few before?â
âThanks, this one was the second one of its kind. I rarely get to make one twice,â John said, running his hand over the welded seam Finn was referring to; he was proud of it.
âYouâve done two, both for
