THEY LEFT A SHORT TIME LATER. “Thanks for backing me up in there,” Lisa said. “He obviously trusted you more.”

“I’m not a bilagáana. Most of us haven’t fared too well trusting white people,” he added with a shrug. “Particularly not when you look back at the past two hundred years or so.”

“True, unfortunately,” she conceded, looking around. “I’ll need to stop by the First Security Bank—any branch will do.”

“That’s not a good plan,” he said slowly. “I’m betting that bank manager Simon Moore can access your accounts without breaking a sweat.”

“There’re still quite a few branches here in New Mexico. No way they could have that many men.”

He considered it in silence.

Sensing his reluctance, she continued. “I’ll go inside the bank and make the withdrawal while you keep a lookout. Just in case they’ve got the capability to track my withdrawal, we’ll put plenty of distance between the bank and Hastiin Nééz’s place. We’ll pick the branch in Bloomfield, east of Farmington. The trick will be to work fast and get out of the area before they can figure out where we’re going, then hole up until tomorrow.”

“All right. But first we put a backup plan in place. We’re going to create a few illusions and provide enough evidence for a false conclusion or two.”

The drive to Bloomfield took them less than an hour. Hunter made a quick stop by a hardware store down the street from the bank and bought a shovel, then they walked across the street to a sporting goods store, which sold mostly hunting and fishing gear, and bought an outdoorsman guide with detailed topographic maps of the county.

“What are you up to?” she pressed.

“I’ll explain later,” he said, pulling up into the parking area beside the bank, located near the center of the small community. “Work fast.”
