Chapter 12
Truth or Lie
Deputy Mitch Gruden knocked on the front door at 2915 Cherry Street.
âOne moment,â a voice yelled inside.
Thirty seconds passed. He was about to knock again when the door opened and a man in his late fifties with short-cropped gray hair sighed. âWhat do you want?â
âMister Ted Nash?â Gruden asked.
âWho wants to know?â
âWe received a complaint youâve been shooting birds with a gun in your backyard.â
âAll lies.â
âMay I come in and get a statement?â
âSure. Why not. You may as well ruin the rest of my day.â
Gruden followed the man down a narrow hallway that opened into a spacious living room.
Nash sat in a recliner and picked up a glass of water on a nearby end table. Condensation formed on the glass and several drips dropped to the floor.
Gruden took a seat opposite the man and started his questions.
âYouâre saying you never fired a gun today?â
âIsnât that what I just told you.â
The officer ignored the statement.
âCan you give me a rundown of your activity this morning?â
âI ran errands all morning. I got back about five minutes before you.â
âCan anyone verify your whereabouts?â
âWhat am I, two?â
âPlease answer the question.â
âI donât think I will.â Nash smiled. âYou canât prove anything.â
If Gruden couldnât prove the man was lying, his chances of becoming a detective would diminish to almost nil. After all, if he couldnât solve a case as simple as this, how could he expect anyone to take him seriously.
Nash picked up the glass of water. pointed a finger at Gruden. Beads of perspiration streaked down the glass âLike I said, you canât prove anything.â
âActually, I just proved youâre lying.
How did Gruden know Nash lied?
Ted Nash said heâd arrived about five minutes before Gruden. This was a lie because the glass had condensation.
