INVITATIONS HOME
In accordance with their friendly nature, Ticos readily invite their foreign friends to their home. If you are invited for dinner, it’s usual to take a small gift, such as flowers, a bottle of alcohol, or some fresh bread or pastries. Don’t arrive early, or exactly on time—any time up to thirty minutes after the appointed hour is acceptable. People at home tend to dress casually, and will expect you to do the same. Even at weddings and special celebrations the dress code is normally more casual than formal. Topics of conversation can safely revolve around the family, Costa Rica, or your home country. Conversations about religion or any kind of criticism of Ticos or their culture can be insulting to your hosts.
