Chapter Twenty-Six

It had been three days since Russo’s bullying attempt at getting information out of Anna. The FBI agent couldn’t help but make a connection between that and the fact that no new bodies had been discovered. As he looked through the case files and reflected on her visible anger, he began to wonder if maybe, just maybe, there was more to her than met the eye.

She doesn’t look like a killer, he thought. But neither did Marie Noe, and she killed eight of her own babies.

He picked up a tiny stress ball off his temporary desk inside the local police station and squeezed it again and again. He didn’t actually use it to relieve stress. Instead, the rhythmic motion of squeezing it, rotating it across his palm, and then squeezing it again helped him get out of his head just enough that inspiration sometimes struck.

Russo’s team back at the Detroit FBI Field Office had already run Anna’s information through every possible criminal database and had come up empty. They also knew that her prints were on file in the civil database because she’d done an art internship at a local school several years ago. But what if there was something in her civil or medical records that could point him in the right direction? With no other good leads, he picked up the phone and asked the first agent on the other end of the line to conduct a different type of search.
