Chapter Thirteen

Ah, fuck, Zeno said.

“Cornelius,” Patrick’s voice was shaking.

“I really wished you hadn’t seen that,” Cornelius said.

Patrick didn’t seem to hear him. He was holding a bone. A femur, to be exact. “There is a skeleton in your garden.”

“I know.”

Patrick blinked, but still seemed in shock. “We need to call the police. Someone buried a person in your backyard. That’s a crime.”

Cornelius stepped closer to him, slowly, because he didn’t want to spook him. “We won’t be doing that.”

“But, we have to. Someone needs to know about this.”

“Someone does.” He stood in front of his beautiful lover. Fuck. It had all been going so well. In the month after Christmas, they had made a lot of progress on the case. They were pretty close to finding Rodney Wayne and Thomas Williams. The pieces were falling into place. They were pretty sure Wayne, Williams, and Blackwood had been the ones behind Zeno’s kidnapping. They had been preparing to mess with their businesses and take them down.

And now this had to happen and fuck all those plans up.

Fuck.

Patrick looked him in the eyes. “Someone does?”

“Yes.”

“But… I just found it.”

There was a shovel on the ground and the Christmas tree a few meters away, waiting to be planted. Patrick wanted to surprise him. That sweet man.

Hell.

He blinked again.

Cornelius could see his brain work as he was still holding the femur. “You knew about it.”

He reached out slowly.

Patrick stepped back. Shook his head. “No.”

“Listen to me.”

“No. Cornelius no.”

“It’ll be alright,” Cornelius said.

Ha, the Shad huffed. Never should have told him where you live.

“Not fucking helpful,” he hissed.

Patrick took another step back. The hole was right behind him, so Cornelius grabbed his arm. He didn’t want Patrick to fall in and hurt himself.

Patrick struggled in his hold. Screamed too, trashed around, tried to get away. “Don’t touch me! Don’t fucking touch me!”

You need to do something about this, Zeno said. But don’t hurt him.

“I know.”

“You’re crazy! I should have known. Don’t touch me!” He landed a good punch with the bone in his hand.

It hurt for a moment, then Cornelius wrenched it out of his fingers and put his hand over Patrick’s mouth and nose. He struggled, of course he did. His eyes were wide and panicked.

It hurt looking at him.

Fuck, Zeno whispered, sounding pained.

Once Patrick was unconsciousness, he scooped him up and went inside. He put Patrick on the bed. Secured one of his ankles to the very sturdy frame with cuffs he had only recently bought for some sexy times, and took the key with him as he left the room.

What are you doing? Zeno asked.

“He’ll be out for a while. I need to plant that tree and close that hole.”

And then?

He was avoiding the issue at hand, needed a moment to think, and was glad Zeno wasn’t calling him out on it.

“And then we wait for him to wake up.”

Obviously, but what then?

“Then I’m going to explain it all.”

That you kill people, because you’re not human. He’ll think you’re crazy.

“I can show him my teeth and claws.
