Chapter 14

Corpse

My heart stopped when I couldn't find Lani anywhere in the compound. Well, it would have stopped if it was beating, I guess. Without a trace of the fucker who killed our prisoner, only the ID left on the floor, my first thoughts were of the women. What if he went for them while we were distracted?

Finding Lovett in the kitchen eased that worry a bit until she told us both the girls were running all over the fucking compound in Liv’s death trap. We raced back out and luckily found them by the shop. I would have torn down all of Zombieland before giving up the search for my little bird. Which just goes to show I’m going completely fucking insane in my undead state because she is a human. I’m a zombie. Those just do not go together, like at all; just count the million and one movies they made on the topic.

However, after thinking the worst, then seeing her whole and unharmed, the only thing on my mind was getting her to safety. I couldn't hear, see, or think about anything beyond that. That brings me back to now, stomping through the compound with my little bird in my arms and Liv stomping behind me as I drag their asses to the panic room. Liv knows the drill here, but that doesn’t mean she isn’t making her displeasure with this turn of events known… loud and clear.

“Are you kidding me, Corpse? There is no way this is necessary. Just because we aren’t part of the Z-Squad doesn’t mean we are some fragile dolls that need to be locked away at the first imaginary sign of whatever the hell you all are so paranoid about. This compound is locked down tighter than Fort Knoxville. What, did one of the twins sneeze in the wrong direction? Did Plague fuck up his chili again and give everyone a case of the runs, and y’all are too embarrassed to have us around while you explode out both ends? This is ridiculous. No way am I sitting in that damn room all day again. Seriously, did Frank and Stein put you up to this? We just went to the junkyard. I’m allowed.”

Liv’s bitching isn’t helping the situation. Although her saying Fort Knox wrong has Lani snorting and opening her mouth to correct her. I give her a smack on the ass and a glare that has her shutting it. I am not in the mood. The further we get into the maze of hallways, the more I can feel Lani getting agitated, the anxiety rolling off her as she squirms restlessly in my hold. With a low growl, I shoot my best glare over my shoulder at Liv, hoping to quiet her protests. She knows she’s safe with me. None of the brothers would ever dream of raising a hand to her for fear of facing Menace’s wrath, but that doesn’t mean I won't do whatever it takes to protect her.
