Chapter 12

It became apparent that her laughter stemmed from utter disbelief. “You’re kidding me, Jansen. You’re honestly telling me the log says she’s in some country I’ve stupidly never heard of when she could be...” She spun on the balls of her feet to glance at everyone. “That says Moldova, but she could be sitting right here in the squad room?”

Jansen nodded at the same time Greeley swatted her arm, saying, “Do not look at Lois like that. She is indispensable to me.”

She rolled her eyes at him. “Seriously, Jansen? ... How the hell does she know this stuff?”

He shrugged and answered, “She knows computers. She knows how to keep from getting caught.”

“Geek chick,” Jessop blurted, and then with a red face he looked at McCallister and apologized.

She squinted her eyes at him. “I thought you two were supposed to be in Storage.”

Greeley cleared his throat. “I’ve got ten people down there hunting for this Joey. I told these two to go home. Their shifts were over.”

“Then go home. If he told you to go, go.”

“Aren’t you going to reply to her post?” Jansen asked.

“Yes ... as soon as I know what to say.”

Jansen made a welcoming gesture toward his chair and said, “I’d rather watch. We’re off the clock, Cap.”

She took a seat and read the exchange again.

Peering over her shoulder, Greeley offered, “She’s obviously mad a Prosser. Maybe you’ll get more if you can keep her anger directed at him and not you. But, my God, don’t increase it so she seriously considers doing something to him.”

“I agree, Cap. ... I need her help, though, without tipping my hand that I know less than Prosser.”

“Well, what do we know about this Joey? She’s female, a teenager, whatever happened to her was before Farber, and that a boy did something to her.”

“But she’s admitting she killed her. Isn’t she? She is by saying Farber is Part II. So what did the boy do to her that would make her risk getting caught just to say ‘get him’? And 20 years later. Why now? And why via Max Wendt?”

“Maybe the boy took credit for the killing!” Jessop nearly shouted. “If she’s a serial killer, wouldn’t that piss her off to no end?”

Jessop quickly added, “And Prosser fell for it! Is that it?”

Jessop volleyed, “So maybe Farber was a ‘look at me’ kind of thing.”

McCallister forcefully shook her head. “No, you guys. She wouldn’t have hidden the body like that. She would have wanted us to see—then, not just 17 years later. She would have made it obvious she did both. Plus, Prosser had already retired. Plus, it was county and not city. Plus, if that story she wrote is accurate, killing Farber wasn’t even premeditated. Plus—” She shook her head again. “We know nothing, f-ing nothing. She figures we have the file. She figures we already matched the hair she gave us. I need the goddamn file! If I screw up and she realizes I’m lying through my teeth, that we know absolutely nothing about something that’s so important to her she’d risk getting caught.
