FAWN

I sat cross-legged in front of the hearth, soaking in the warmth of the dancing flames at my back. My fire element was most in tune with anger, and that emotion continued to vibrate through my being.

Karma purred as she swatted at the dancing red swirls around me.

Sucking in a deep breath, I willed myself to focus on calmness, even as my skin crawled at how close the assassin had gotten to my cottage wards.

The mages I was in charge of were put in danger due to them leaving the wards protecting them while they were inside of the cottage, but instead of being upset that they would die and I would be forced to take their place in their duties of the empire, I was more concerned about their wellbeing.

It was a dangerous thing.

Fire licked through my veins like a wildfire burning me from the inside out. I hadn’t been this angry in centuries, and I knew I needed to breathe and calm down before I burnt my cottage down again.

Exhaling, I released my anger, and it flowed out of me like smoke. The flames flickered in a more controlled way, and my magic filled with peace as my elements balanced out again. “Okay, so let’s run through what we know.”

Silas crossed his ankles in front of him as he leaned against the side of the sofa, and his lips curved down in a frown. “An assassin has been watching us for who knows how long, and the spirit of the assassin wasn’t present when he attacked, and the magic signature matches our hexes. So whoever was behind the hexes would be the same one we are looking for.”

“The same one who is trying to cause a war?” I clarified, and his jaw tightened.

“Yes, and we need to figure out who he is—sooner rather than later.”

“Bone mages can only control mages for a week, and when that’s over, the bone mage and victim pass out for however long they were controlled,” I muttered, racking my brain for knowledge of a bone mage’s capabilities.

It had been so long since I’d worked with one.

“Bones, in general, boost their magical powers,” Bastian added from his spot on the floor where Oz had curled up on his lap.

Charm pawed at my side with Cosmo next to her, and I sprinkled water and leaves over them with a sigh.

Silas’s gaze dropped to the water dripping down on Cosmo. I could see the longing in his eyes the same way I could see it in Aimon’s as he watched Charm let the leaves fall down around her.

“What about Matthieu? He’s dual classed, but he’s still a bone mage,” I brought up. Even thinking of that slimy mage made my skin crawl.

“No.” Silas was quick to dismiss it. “He’s been working with Emperor Lloyd even longer than I have. I highly doubt he’d be one to do this. Emperor Lloyd trusts him, so I do too.”

“I wouldn’t dismiss his possible involvement so quickly. His very personality is suspicious to me.
