Chapter 11

Clapping his hands, a wide smile on his face, Ramirez broke the news. Except, after he’d delivered the information, he realized that Don was snoring. With his head lolled back and to the side, Don had his eyes closed and tongue out. A dark stain spread around the collar of his shirt, right under a thin, glistening trickle of saliva.

Frowning, he looked down at the man. Ramirez tried to keep his cool. He’d just gone through a humiliating experience, working to get Sherry to accept the man into her home. And there he was, asleep, blissfully oblivious to the world around him.

However, when Ramirez turned to look at the broken door, he was pleasantly surprised to find it had been barricaded off quite effectively with a couch. A series of obstacles had been placed behind the couch. Several lamps, some of them standing upright, others overturned, and still others laying flat added to the barrier. “At least you did that before falling asleep,” he muttered, giving the snoring Don a scathing look nonetheless. Then a thought occurred to him: this motherfucker just lost his house.

Shaking his head, Ramirez decided to got sit on the floor next to the boy and wait for things to settle down a bit.

“How’s the game going, Caleb?” Ramirez asked.

“It’s fine. I think something’s up with the internet, though,” he said.

Ramirez raised an eyebrow. He squinted and looked up at the screen. “What makes you say that?” he asked. Everything looked pretty much the same as it had before.

“Not as many people in the lobby. Lots of lag,” Caleb said.

“What does that mean? ‘Lots of lag?’” Ramirez asked.

“There’s just a delay in gameplay, I guess is one way to explain it…” Caleb said, never taking his attention off of the screen. He made little facial expressions as he moved with the controller, tracking things with his eyes.

“Oh. And that’s… not normal? It can’t be explained by other factors?” Ramirez asked. He began to wonder just how long it might actually take for the electrical grid to go down in the area. This train of thought brought a whole new level of urgency to the dangerous game they were playing. He felt ashamed that he hadn’t even bothered to think of that possibility before. The fact that he’d been tied up in the intimate art of trying to survive seemed somewhat trivial.

Ramirez almost wanted to up and leave. If things hadn’t gotten bad enough already, he realized that the city would freak the fuck out once everyone lost power.

He didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. It seemed so cynical and yet profound, that most of the residents of Las Cruces would care more about losing their Wi-Fi than they would ambulance drivers being sniped in the street.

“If we lose power… all of El Paso will, too,” Ramirez said aloud. He glanced toward Don.

Suddenly, movement caught his eye. Turning, Ramirez leaned on one forearm as he peered out the window to the left. He squinted, trying to see out into the darkening evening.
