State Your Own Realistic Optimism.

Poor conditions cannot always be alleviated. The forces that maintain them may truthfully be overwhelming. Yet there are always choices, alternative ways of moving with or against the stream. As I have watched groups and individuals deal with problems, I have become convinced that a serious and resourceful attempt at problem solving is invariably worthwhile. Even if the payoff is only in clarification, self-worth, and enthusiasm, it is enough.

Therefore, come back at negativism with an expression of your own realistic optimism. Be ready to say it twice if necessary. Here’s what the dialogue might sound like:

YOU: We’ve got to pick up that package before tomorrow.

NEG: It’s 5:10. They’re closed.

YOU: Maybe someone will still be there.

NEG: Never. Those guys leave by 5:01 at the latest.

YOU: Sure, but remember last year when we knocked on the side door at the post office to get that Special Delivery letter. It was Sunday, and it took us fifteen minutes before anyone came, but the gal who answered the door got the letter for us.
