Addy sat on the couch idly flipping through fabric swatches as Dee-Dee plopped down sample books. She was trying to brighten the kitchen with color and paint, a task she had been anticipating until now.

After a moment of stability, her life had once again derailed.

Even after losing her job, Maureen, and her grandmother, she had believed she could start fresh in Deale with her brother. But now this had to happen. Tommy had nothing to do with the death of the reporter, but no one but her would believe him. So far she had managed to safeguard him from false accusations, and she hoped her luck would hold in at least this one area.

Then there was her confusion over Liberty and Karen.

Liberty led such an exciting life traveling and fighting for what she believed in. Karen was, well, Karen—her first love. She was sexy as hell, but Addy couldn’t get past the betrayal. After all these years, why couldn’t she get Karen out of her bloodstream?

“Addy?”

“Huh?”

“I said, what do you think of this plaid? Hello? Where’ve you been?”

“Oh, uh, yes, that’s nice, Dee-Dee.”

“You’re thinking about Karen.”

“How did you know?”

“It hasn’t been that long since you were all dreamy-eyed over her. Hell, I’m surprised you’re the one who got through high school and went on to college. You didn’t seem to pay much attention in class, especially if Karen was there. I busted my ass and my parents were thrilled if I brought home Cs.”

“You never busted your ass studying in high school.”

“I did if you count Mr. Peterson, who nearly broke his hand spanking me.”

“Mr. Peterson spanked you? My God, what did you do?”

“I was a very naughty girl, and Mr. Peterson liked his girls naughty.” Dee-Dee giggled and winked.

Addy rolled her eyes. “Geez, Dee-Dee.”

“Hey. I graduated, didn’t I? But enough about me, although it is my favorite subject. What’s up with you and Karen? Why can’t you two get along?”

“You know why.” Addy picked up another book of swatches.

“Come on. You can’t be serious. That old story about Miss Wilson—who, by the way, was pretty damn hot. Still is.”

“You’ve seen her?”

“Seen her? I’ve slept with her. She’s still teaching gym, and, for a woman her age, she still has a great ass.”

“You see?” Addy snapped. “You and Karen are both so casual in your sexual relationships. It doesn’t matter who it is. Whatever happened to monogamy, loyalty, respect?”

“Now wait a minute, Addy.” Dee-Dee put her swatch book on the coffee table. “Don’t go confusing Karen’s one mistake years ago with my extracurricular activities. She’s suffered enough, don’t you think?”

“Suffered? Suffered? She broke my heart. I was—no, still am—hurt. Do you call sleeping with Miss Wilson suffering?”

“Well, no, now that you mention it—”

“I can’t possibly see how Karen has suffered the way I have.” Addy knew the pitch of her voice was steadily rising, but she couldn’t help it.

“She’s in love with you, you idiot. Can’t you see that?”

Addy stared at her, trying to comprehend what she’d said.

Why, Karen probably never gave her a second thought now, except when she tried to act all macho around Liberty.
