In 1998, the director and cinematographer for the New Line Cinema movie Pleasantville actually worked the color correction process in reverse. Because Pleasantville’s story line deals with black and white and color as part of the plot, the entire movie was shot in color. Then they had to remove the color (a process called desaturation) from the parts of the movie that needed to appear to be black and white. This ended up being a joint process of the colorists and the special effects department.

PREPARING YOURSELF

Some digital colorists have college degrees in film production, but many of them learn on the job. Any courses in film study, video production, and film production that are available in high school will be helpful, as well as art courses that deal in photography and color. For students who don’t want to earn a college degree, it is best to find employment in the film industry, perhaps as an apprentice or assistant in the postproduction department, and then learn and progress through watching and training with established colorists. It also helps to be familiar with computer programs, the telecine process for transferring motion picture film into video, and the digital intermediate (DI) process for digitizing a motion picture and manipulating the color and other image characteristics.

The 1939 movie The Wizard of Oz required that some parts of the movie be in black and white and others be in color.
