Chapter 15

I have only enough time to run home, freshen up with a change of clothes, eat the ham sandwich I was going to bring for lunch, and feed Bruce. I still want to hang a couple more worm circles as Tyler had insisted I add Dragons Love Tacos by Adam Rubin and The Kissing Hand by Audrey Penn, two new books his grandparents had sent him for an early Halloween gift. Halloween is a holiday created to punish elementary school teachers for any unkind thought they’ve ever had about a difficult student—the perfect mixture of sugar and costumes and parties colliding in an explosion of hysteria in elementary schools across the country, mixed in with an uptick in overzealous parental involvement or no involvement at all, depending upon the child. But that’s next week. First, I need to get through the fall open house.

Freddy is sitting on a lawn chair in front of his apartment when I pull into the lot. There’s no avoiding him now. I look at my watch and begin to think of excuses I can use to get into my apartment quickly because the truth usually isn’t good enough for Freddy. My phone dings. I read the message.

Help me, Vivi. I need to get out of this

place. Don’t forget Mrs. Green.

I shove my phone to the bottom of my bag and don’t reply. There’s too much to do tonight.
