Motherly conviviality in Manchester and Barcelona

After becoming mothers, women start using their local areas more intensely than before and seek other mothers to spend time with (Byrne, 2006; Fenster, 2005; Ryan et al., 2009; Wessendorf, 2014b). This section discusses the importance of a connection between motherly activities, spaces for mothers and conviviality in various areas of the neighbourhoods in both Manchester and Barcelona, including nurseries, schools and children’s centres where parents and children meet others from different backgrounds (see also Rzepnikowska, 2018a). The interviews with Polish migrant mothers emphasised the significance of spaces for mothers and families, as well as family activities in facilitating conviviality. Several interviewees established strong links with other mothers from various backgrounds on the basis of shared experiences of being migrant mothers. The interviews shed light on mothering practices which are not only gendered but also raced and classed in some instances. Several examples also show how migrant mothers create opportunities for cross-cultural interaction between those from various backgrounds.
