Burkhardt: In 1932 you went to the Caribbean and in 1948 visited France with your wife. In the preface to the Quality Paperback Book Club volume you mention that you went to the Caribbean when it was the best time to go to Europe. How aware were you of the travels of other writers during the earlier part of the twentieth century? Say, Hemingway, Pound, and Dos Passos in Europe in the twenties and early thirties, and Hemingway’s own later travels to the Caribbean?

Maxwell: I really wasn’t very conscious of the American expatriate writers in the twenties and thirties. Glenway Wescott and Janet Flanner later became friends of mine, and I loved to hear them talk about Paris during the prewar period, but I think it may have been that when I had time I had no money and when I had money I had no time.
