BORGES. That’s the problem with heaven . . . no, but perhaps there’s a meagre population in heaven, no? Since many are called but few are chosen. Here I remember that terrible phrase of Kierkegaard who says that if he came to the final judgement, and there were only one person sent to hell, and he were that damned person, he would sing de profundis praise of the Lord and his justice. Unless we think of that remark as a way of bribing God (laughs), that he wanted to be on good terms with God, but I think not.

FERRARI. A way of gaining entry to heaven.

BORGES. Yes, but better not to think that it’s an act of bribery, or that God would accept that bribe, no?

FERRARI. Perhaps Nabokov is right when he says that Dostoyevsky is for him a better dramatist than a novelist.
