Chapter Thirty-Two – Slater

‘Slater?’

‘Yeah?’

Dale’s preparing dinner for us. I sip my whisky, watching her as she turns down the hob and comes to the table.

‘There’s something I need to tell you.’

My body tenses as I see the serious expression on her face.

‘I’m listening.’

‘I’m thinking of taking over my father’s business.’

‘I’m sorry?’

‘I want to take over as boss. After my father.’

I process her words then shake my head.

‘Where the hell did that come from?’ Five minutes ago she was graduating and applying for jobs in an office. Now she wants to be a crime boss?

‘I think I could do it.’

‘No. Not going to happen. That’s not possible.’

‘Why not?’

‘It’s just not possible.’ There’s no way she can run a crew. She has no idea about the business. It’s far too dangerous. I can’t believe she even suggested it.

‘Why isn’t it possible that I take over my father’s work? I’m going to inherit everything from him. Why can’t I run the business as well?’ She frowns.

‘Because you’re with me.’ I practically growl the words. How can she not understand that, after everything?

‘I’d still be with you. I’d just run my father’s crew as well.’

I toss the contents of the whisky tumbler into my mouth, then pour myself a second.

‘What about your degree? You were going to get a job.’

‘I know, and I’ve still got my degree, it’s not going anywhere. Maybe I will get a normal job at some point. If I don’t like being the boss.’

If she doesn’t like being the boss? I would laugh, except she’s deadly serious, making it not in the least bit funny. She has no clue; how can she suddenly be a boss? Out of nowhere.

‘You’re with me, little bird.’ I glance up at her. ‘If you run north Rotterdam then indirectly, I’ll run north Rotterdam, which isn’t possible.’

‘Why not?’

‘Because then I’ll lose the south and the east. If you run the north, I’ll lose everything.’

‘How?’ She pulls a face.

‘Bana and Cesar won’t work with us any more, they know you’re mine. How can I stay neutral?’

She turns her back on me and stirs something on the hob. ‘Bana will be dead.’

‘Dale, I’m not taking sides. We’re neutral, we’re middlemen, that’s our position. Staying neutral gives us the most power. And money.’

‘But, Slater, I can’t let my father’s business collapse, everything he worked for, I can’t just let it be for nothing.’

‘I didn’t rescue you and kill your father just so you could step into his shoes, Dale. That was not the plan.’

‘Why did you do it?’

‘So you could be mine.’ Anger pulses through my veins, and I have to fight to keep control of myself. The mere fact that she’s suggesting it angers me, that she would even consider doing it hurts me. Doesn’t she realise the implications of the suggestion? I thought she felt the same as I do. I would do anything for her, and she wants to ruin that? I stand up and walk towards her.

‘Are you willing to give me up, Dale?’ I step closer and look into her eyes.
