CHAPTER FOURTEEN

"It's no use,” Frondle said. “Clearly, any affection for Garton Saxon has drained from this woman's heart. For excellent reasons," he added.

"That's true," Quint agreed. "But she used to love him. I recognized that look in her eyes. It's the same one I've seen in Hazel's—empty death where once there was passion." He kicked a nearby rock, then made a small noise of pain, having kicked it harder than he'd meant to. Frondle took a dim view of this chain of events.

Quint continued, "But that's where I got this idea. I've sort of been looking into love spells."

Frondle was so shocked that he reached for the hilt of his sword before realizing he wasn't wearing one. "Love spells? Quint!”

"I know. It was a stupid internet rabbit hole. I would never cast one. I was thinking about how I don't want to make her love me now. I want to go back in time to when she did love me. I started looking into time travel instead."

Frondle grabbed Quint by the collar. "Those are serious crimes against the natural order. Depending on your school of thought, love magic is worse than death magic, and time magic is worse than both. You could end the universe!"

"My universe is as good as dead now," Quint stated dramatically. Frondle wished Pepe was here to kick him but settled for shaking Quint like a rag doll.

“Anyway,” Quint continued. “Time travel magic is dangerous and also a huge hassle. Like, a lot of work. I don’t want to spend the next two years hunting chronocerouses for their horns. But, I found a spell that can transport someone back to an earlier point in their memories. If we cast it on Muriel, she'll think it's 1972 again.”

Frondle frowned. Garton Saxon had not been a force for good, and Frondle did not want to do anything to make her love the evil elf again since she’d been through too much. But with the lives of every ex-Silver Griffin at stake, the price for moral clarity might be too high.

"Is it permanent?" Frondle asked. "I will not send that woman back into Garton Saxon's emotional clutches for all eternity.”

"It's temporary. The spell takes a huge amount of energy to maintain, and it wears off almost immediately. I..." Quint’s voice trailed off, and he looked ashamed.

"What?” Frondle demanded.

"I hired an ErrandBoy to practice on. I told him what I was trying to do, and he agreed. Apparently, it's way better than doing dirty laundry or whatever people hire them for. Nice guy."

Frondle frowned. Despite Quint's protests, he had clearly done more than a little magical googling. “You’re wading in deep waters, Quintilius.”

Quint cringed at the use of his full name. “Whatever. He said he enjoyed re-living his college years.”

"I do not think Muriel will feel the same way. It is wrong to change people's minds against their will," Frondle stated.

"We're not going to change her mind. We're just going to take it back a few years, and only for a few minutes," Quint corrected.
