Chapter 9

Closer to winter, the days were getting shorter. Rain and gusty winds often made walking on the streets a nuisance. At such times, it was nice to stay in bed at least a few minutes longer, stare at the creeping dawn, and analyze whatever important things had happened recently, and whatever might happen in the near future, in relation to the task at hand. Today though, Lollita did not give him this chance. She woke up early, before dawn. As if struck by unexpected, troublesome news, she suddenly jumped up, brought her watch to her eyes and rasped, “Oh! I have to rush.”

“You didn’t tell me anything yesterday,” Glenn complained, watching her dress. She was indeed in a hurry.

“I didn’t want to. Glenn, darling—”

“What are you going to do?”

“Please, Glenn. Later. Do you love me?”

His heart skipped two beats. This was as unexpected as a shower from a clear sky. He gasped.

“Yes, I do.”

They had never exchanged those simple, magical words. A thought crossed his mind that only those possessed by love know their sacred power and charm.

She was already at the door when he pleaded, “Please, don’t go. Stay a bit longer.”

She came back and kissed him.

The key was to develop the likely scenarios to the tiniest details, predict what might go right or wrong, and make the best of it. This was a sort of mental game, which he always played before the real one began. It was practically impossible to take everything into account, but when the time of action came, he was well-prepared because most of his responses had already been thought over.

Many people try to do this, but not in the right way. The trick was to not let emotion drift you away from cool calculation. Like everything else, it took time, effort, discipline, and practice.

With all his smarts and experience, he was at loss with Lollita. Her behavior was often unpredictable, even defying common sense. When such things happened, Glenn did not rush to conclusions. He realized that he simply did not understand her reasons, and she did not care to explain.

The quiet of the morning did not last long. The ringing telephone, loud and irritating at this early hour, yanked him back to the world of action.

“Glenn, this is Jeff. Come to Puerto Madero at five p.m. By the bridge, you know where.”

“Will do.”

A week ago, two secret agents had arrived to Buenos Aires. They were older than he, but junior in rank, and supposed to be his subordinates. He had not seen them yet.

Their choice of meeting place was probably for a reason, he guessed. Before coming to Argentina he
