There is some evidence that bone regeneration is more predictable than periodontal regeneration, where complete wound closure is achieved over the membrane – that is, in the absence of teeth or a transmucosal implant abutment. This is likely to be due to the fact that healing can occur in the absence of chronic irritation from a plaque biofilm. Therefore, when treating peri-implant bone loss, the transmucosal component is removed and a cover screw used to hold the membrane in place, prior to complete flap closure over the cover screw to re-cover the implant. Resorbable bone screws and pins may also be used to secure the membrane peripherally (Chapter 10).
