Chapter 16

Kenji

At long last, I’d been able to have a heart to heart with Glori and explain myself. I didn’t want to make excuses, but she seemed to understand why I’d chosen not to tell her while we’d been alone together in her little cottage. I still had a long way to go to make it up to her, however.

I left Glori in her room and then climbed the ladder up to the next tier of the shared Guard chambers. Passing by Thressa’s room, I entered mine and Angel’s room without knocking, hoping he’d return from training soon. To my surprise, he was already there, fiddling with the strings on his Fae fabrics.

“Ken!” Angel’s smile spread slowly as he studied me, probably trying to determine how my conversation with Glori had gone. “Well?”

“Glori and I talked.” I couldn’t help the grin that crept over my face. “And kissed.”

“So she forgives you?”

I tilted a hand back and forth. “She understands why I didn’t tell her when I had the chance. But I want to rebuild her trust in me, and I know just how to do it.”

“Oh?” A shadow passed over Angel’s expression. He probably felt like he had as much to atone for as I did.

“We need to convince Lyall and the others to go back with us to the human realm.”

“Glori wants to…” He frowned, then snapped his fingers. “Graduation, right?”

I nodded. “She knows Lyall won’t like it. Even Lauren already gave her flack about it.”

“I can understand why. She’s safe here.” Angel got to his feet. “Is she talking to Lyall right now? Should we go support her arguments?”

“No, no, she went to bed. Jovanka and Lauren are guarding her. I want to do this on her behalf.”

I wanted to do a lot more than that. I would do whatever it took to regain her favor. But I also wouldn’t compromise her safety, so we needed to get the Guard on board.

Angel turned away to pick up his fedora, but the frown on his face told me something else was still on his mind. “What is it?” If he wasn’t fully bought in, I didn’t know how I would ever convince Lyall and the rest.

“I’m… glad you finally talked to Glori. I guess I’m a little envious that it was so easy for you.”

A chuckle escaped. “You didn’t want her to go easy on me, huh? Did she rake you over the coals?”

He waved me away. “No, it’s not that, it’s just that… you don’t have to worry about your magic accidentally seducing Glori into making you her consort against her wishes.”

We’d been over this before. But I tried a different tactic this time. “Dude, she wants us both, she’s kissed us both, and I don’t have Nixie powers like you do… Surely that proves she legitimately likes us both?”

Angel donned his fedora and gave me a half-hearted smile. “Let’s go talk to Lyall.”

We took the ladder down one at a time, and then I approached Lyall’s door and knocked on it.
