Over a room service meal of traditional Moroccan food, Mitchell passed on to his friends what he had learned.
“Fahimah said Mister Awzal may have been in his late eighties, but as far as she was concerned his memory was as sharp as ever,” said Mitchell. “He said his father rarely spoke about the war, but when he did, he always talked about the time he and his people captured Cabrera’s patrol. His intention was to capture the legionnaires and trade them back for Berbers being held by the Spanish. Things, however, didn’t go as planned.”
“They never do,” said Jackson.
“What happened?” asked Sam.
“The legionnaires fought back and refused to surrender. When the shooting stopped, five of the Spaniards were dead, and the remainder were badly wounded. Awzal took the dead and wounded far away from Chefchaouen, so the Spanish wouldn’t have a reason to take their anger out on the villagers.”
“Where did they go?” asked Cardinal.
Mitchell turned his laptop around so everyone could see the screen. “Awzal took them to an old Roman temple, which is about sixty klicks southeast of here. Awzal still hoped to nurse the wounded ones back to health so he could exchange them. Unfortunately, without adequate medical facilities, one by one, the legionnaires succumbed to their wounds. Cabrera was the last one to die.”
“Any word of a map?” said Jackson.
“None,” responded Mitchell “But the men were buried in their uniforms, so the map could still be on Cabrera’s remains.”
“At least we now know where to find Cabrera,” said Sam.
“Yes and no,” said Mitchell. “The problem is the bodies were dumped into a dry well at the temple. We’re going to have to go down into the well to try and find their remains.”
Sam smiled. “That’s not a problem. I’ll do it. Let’s be honest, here, Nate couldn’t fit. And Gordon hates spelunking, even if he won’t admit it, whereas I love exploring caves.”
“I could go,” protested Mitchell.
“Ryan, I was just sparing your feelings. I put you up there with Nate. If it gets narrow, I can wiggle my way through. You, on the other hand, would probably get stuck.”
Jackson chuckled. “Time to hit the gym, Captain.”
Mitchell patted his firm stomach. “That wasn’t nice. I’m in great shape.”
“Sure you are,” toyed Jackson.
