At this point, our counseling and decluttering work took an important turn. We agreed to remove all items that she did not use often to a storage unit and set the house up with what remained. Most of the items in the basement were boxed; all excess furniture, anything being held on to “just in case,” and all off-season clothing went to storage. All items that were kept “just in case” were stored at the front of the unit, where Rachel could access them if she found that she needed them. All boxes were labeled and itemized. Rachel was given a manifest list. We developed a map of the unit showing where each numbered box was located. This was done to provide Rachel assurance that if she needed anything specific, she would know what box it was in and where in the unit the box was located. The boxes were stored in rows, with access between each row.
