Chapter 28

The formal ceremony was followed by a reception in a nearby banquet hall. Once there, Ursula, Gossamer, and I found a table to huddle around while waiting for Kane to join us.

“He’s taking his sweet time,” Gossamer noted glumly, watching her boyfriend – who had entered through a side door – work his way across the room.

In Kane’s defense, he was getting congratulated every few steps. Ergo, even though he had quickly spied us after entering the banquet hall, getting to us was proving to be no easy feat. Eventually, however, he made his way to our table, at which point I sensed Gossamer’s mood lighten considerably.

“Congrats, babe,” she cooed, giving Kane a hug. “I’m so happy for you.”

She then planted a loving, lingering kiss on him. In truth, it only lasted a few seconds, but was of such intensity that it seemed longer. When they separated, Kane looked like he was on cloud nine.

“Uh,” I droned, “I’m just going to limit my warm wishes to ‘Congratulations’ and a hearty handshake.”

“So no kiss?” Kane joked, shaking the hand I had extended after speaking. “And you look so pretty.”

“Ha, ha,” I said sarcastically. “But that does remind me: I did have my own tux that I could have brought.”

“I know, but they really didn’t decide on a dress code until the last minute,” Kane stated. “I didn’t want you to bring something formal and then never take it off the hanger. Plus, it was just as easy to provide you with appropriate attire.”

I was about to make a witty reply to that when a beefy fellow clapped a meaty hand on Kane’s shoulder, saying, “Congratulations, Thuergist!”

“Hey, thanks,” Kane uttered, shaking the man’s hand. The fellow was obviously just passing by, because he moved on without making further comment, seemingly heading for a nearby buffet table.

“Thuergist?” I repeated, plainly curious.

“It’s just a title,” Kane explained. “It’s what the Maximus was saying after my group received our medallions – that we were all theurgists now – but you probably couldn’t hear him over the crowd. Anyway, it just denotes the level I’m at in terms of magical ability.”

“He’s being modest,” Gossamer remarked. “For the Kroten Venefici, it’s not the highest rank, but it’s the most difficult one to attain and usually takes the longest.”

“Just out of curiosity, how long are we talking about?” Ursula asked.

“About fifteen years on average,” Kane replied, “although some might take twenty or more.”

“But you did it in record time,” I noted.

Kane merely shrugged, and empathically I detected that he was slightly embarrassed to be talking about himself in this complimentary fashion.

“So what’s the deal on your cousin?” Ursula asked, staring across the room.

Following her gaze, I noticed that she was looking at Lamont. He was completely surrounded by what seemed to be an excited and enthusiastic mob, heartily slapping him on the back and offering their congratulations. From the way they crowded around him, you would have thought he was a movie star.

“Technically, he’s my second cousin,” Kane clarified.
