On yet another day as I was walking and praying, I pondered the magnitude of the impact that words have had on my life. The Bible says that God spoke the world into existence. His words have certainly given my world new meaning. I prayed that God's Word would give new meaning to my granddaughter Katherine's life and that His Word would have a powerful impact on her.

I explained to God during my “walking prayer” all the things He already knew—that Katherine was only fifteen, that she had lost the mother who loved her deeply and understood her better than anyone and on whom she had depended so much. Through an avalanche of tears, I asked God to help Katherine understand what had happened in a way that would make her know that God is God and that He loves her mother more by far than she did, that everything He does is in our long-range best interests, and that everything He does is motivated by His love for her.

I wept as I prayed and walked, knowing the pain and the hurt that Katherine was going through because she missed her mother, knowing her need for a loving God.

I recalled an incident at the hospital when the Redhead could see how distraught Katherine was and how desperately she was trying to get close to her mother. She encouraged Katherine to climb onto the hospital bed and lie by her mother's side. Katherine did that and stayed there for some time, crying and holding the mother she loved so dearly. At one point during Suzan's hospital stay, Katherine asked the question that was ripping out our hearts: “What will I do without her?”

As I continued to walk and pray, my mind drifted to my childhood and scenes of my mother, who had only a fifth-grade education and who found herself a widow during the heart of the Depression with six children too young to work. My mother used to sing “The Old Rugged Cross” on the back porch while she churned butter from the milk she got from our five milk cows. To this day, when anyone sings “The Old Rugged Cross,” I weep tears of gratitude for my mother, who was filled with an incredible amount of faith, love, and courage. I remember going to Wednesday night prayer meetings with my mother and hearing her sing in her clear voice “Sweet Hour of Prayer.” When I hear anyone sing “Sweet Hour of Prayer” today, I am flooded with memories of my mother.

On my walk, I began to pray for Chad. I realized the immediacy of the loss he must feel in his daily life. As he took on the unfamiliar tasks of providing meals and making certain that various things in the household were running smoothly, I knew he missed Suzan in ways he had not imagined. I realized Chad's need for God's love at this time. I prayed and wept while asking
