Many Germans portrayed themselves as very open minded, but then something happens in the media, like this sexual assault incident during New Year’s Eve 2015. . . . In the last fifteen years, I have not been the subject of racial slurs. But recently, I was promoting my business, and someone walked by and made an anti-foreigner slur. And given my profession, I have built thick skin, so it does not bother me as much anymore, but one can sense that they are looking at you with different eyes, a different glance. We were on the path of being accepted; then they use phrases like “you foreigners” or “all foreigners,” and everyone is lumped together again.
