Every once in awhile a soul would shriek as though she hadn’t forgotten she’d just experienced death and was reliving it as it were. This occurred when Azrael and Death appeared simultaneously which was as rare as it was undesirable. Death had innumerable wardrobes and guises Azrael suspected but whenever he encountered the great Thanatos, Death appeared as lichen.

When he confided this to the Devil, the Devil considered it not particularly peculiar. Lichens are mysteriously complex. They come in peace and are theoretically immortal.

I find it absolutely marvelous that you see Death as lichen, the Devil said, laughing. It really is so you.
