Chapter Fifteen
John Crowell sipped his coffee and toyed with the chocolate cake heâd ordered from the café in the neighboring town. Tim Worley hadnât arrived yet. Not anything unusual for him. Damn the man for sounding off at the board meeting, but he hadnât been much better himself. He wanted to wring Jessica Allenâs neck. Because her dead husbandâs family had been leaders in this town since its founding didnât mean she could mess with his plans. Too bad she won the election. He couldâve manipulated Palmer Northcutt with his eyes closed.
The door opened and Tim hurried in, brushing snow from his shoulders. âMan, itâs rough out there. Not certain the roads will be open much longer.â One hand rattled the change in his pocket, a nervous habit that set Johnâs teeth on edge.
âCoffee and apple pie, Babe,â Tim told the waitress, who rushed off to do his bidding. âAre you sure we needed to meet?â
âYou think we should ignore your outburst at the meeting the other night? Iâd like us not to have to mess with Jessica Allen because sheâs a royal pain in my keister, but we canât announce it at a board meeting. That was too stupid for words.â
âSo, what do we do now?â
âWe should disappear the woman before the issue comes up at the next board meeting.â
âJeez, John. You really mean get rid of her?â
âHow successful have you been at making her change her mind, Tim? Youâve tried scare tactics, and nothing works. Sheâll never forgive or forget what happened to her nosy husband.â
âGuess youâre right. How do you think we should make this happen?â
âWell, up to now, you havenât accomplished the task of with getting her to back off. I figure itâs time to hire it done. Hate to spend the money, which will come out of your share, by the way, if we have to go in that direction. But weâll never push this project through if she remains on the board. And I want you to get this job.â
âI agree, John. We should be able to pull in a hefty pile of dough. We can find a dozen or more ways we can cut corners on this one.â
âWeâre agreed. Iâll make it happen. In the meantime, keep your trap shut. Donât do anything else to call attention to yourself. When it happens, I donât want them coming to look for you. Iâll key you in on the time to make sure you have an alibi. Both of us should have one. Solid, no way they can pin anything on us.â
âOkay, if you think you can handle it, John. I kind of liked the idea of taking her to Maine and dumping her into the ocean from one of the rocky cliffs. That was going to be my next thing to try. But if youâre going to handle it, thatâs fine with me. Iâm heading out.â He rose and shrugged into his coat.
âYeah. Iâll drink another cup of coffee to go with my cake here, and then Iâll follow you.
