WHEN WE GOT INTO the car this time, the kid dropped his backpack on the floorboard and started talking almost as soon as he buckled up. âMiss Su jumped up onto my lap and let me pet her!â TiramisuâMiss Suâwas the American Bobtail Matheson had given Theo their first Christmas together. Joe sighed. âIt must be really nice to have a pet.â
âAre you okay?â
âExcuse me?â
âEyes itchy? Nose runny or feels like you have to sneeze?â
âNo.â
And he wasnât coughing or scratching at his arms or chest. I nodded. Seemed like he wasnât allergic. âWeâll talk about it in the morning.â
âYeah?â
âYeah.â
âCool!â
âHow do you feel about the games Theo let you borrow?â
âTheyâre great.â Heâd been dazzled by the size of Theoâs collection of computer games. âHeâs got Dragon Riders: Chronicles of Pern, and he said the next time we come over heâll play it with me. But he wouldnât even let me try Tomb Raider.â He sounded aggrieved.
âWhen you get older.â
âThatâs what he said, but Iâm not a baby, you know. Iâve seen Lara Croft.â
I swallowed a laugh. Iâd seen the games before heâd tucked them into his backpack: Sims 2, Clue, and Super Mario Brothers. They were all suitable for a preteen.
âBut I still want to play Tomb Raider,â he muttered.
This time I did laugh as I put the Dodge in gear and steered it away from the curb.

We were halfway home when it occurred to me I didnât know if we had anything suitable for a kidâs breakfast in our fridge. Iâd been out of town, and so had Quinn, so it was likely we didnât have anything suitable for our breakfast.
âWeâll have to make a stop.â
âOkay.â
âWhat do you like for breakfast?â
âExcuse me?â
Jesus, was he always this polite? âBreakfast? The first meal of the day? Supposedly the most important?â
âI know what breakfast isâ¦â There was a long, considering pause before he concluded, âSir.â
What the fuck? âYeah, so what do you like?â
I caught his shrug from the corner of my eye. âCerealâs fine.â He stared out the passenger window.
âWhat kind?â There was one of those twenty-four-hour pharmacies nearby, and it stocked everything from the expected health and beauty aids to toys, clothes, DC souvenirs, and, more to the point, groceries.
He shrugged again.
âFine. Iâll call it.â And if he didnât like it, tough shit.
âWell, you said you were the adult.â Was the littleâwas the kid laughing at me?
âJust donât you forget it.â

The parking lot of the pharmacy was well lit, and I found a spot I was comfortable with. At that time of night, there were only a few cars there, and I figured most of them belonged to employees.
âAnything else you might need here?â He had a toothbrush and toothpaste, and even though they were only travel sizes, the toothbrush and toothpaste in the toiletry case were still in their original packages, so he could use those if he had to. Heâd probably need other stuff, thoughâ¦I drew a blank. What else in the way of
