WHEN THE MENACING SOUND of the mysterious ticking finally stopped, there was an audible pop, and Foster felt his stomach drop—the same feeling he once had when he and his sister went on a ride at the Sabbath Carnival a few years back. The ride was called the Human Blender, and the gist was that you were strapped in with a bunch of other people against the wall of a massive metal drum, then they’d spin the drum so fast that you were stuck to the wall like a bug. Next thing you knew? Clink-Clank, the floor drops away. Everyone screams and blood rushes to your head and your stomach lifts into your chest— the fear and discomfort being part of the fun, the whole point of the ride, really.

Foster didn’t know what the point of this ride was, but he had the feeling it wouldn’t be anywhere near as fun (or harmless) as the Human Blender, and all he wanted to do right now was get the hell off.

“Where are we?” Red said from the backseat.

Foster’s brain caught up to what was happening and tried desperately to scratch out some sort of rationale for what he was seeing through the windows of the car. Is that…

Water?

He took his hands off the wheel and spun to see Tom staring out the windshield, Hank and Red in the backseat, arguing in frightened voices as they stared in horror through their respective windows.

All around them, pushing against the windows that were not windows, flowing lazily across the windshield in waves… was water. They were submerged in it.

“It’s the lake!” Tom said suddenly, sounding hopeful despite the bizarre nature of their situation. “I don’t know how… but we’re floating near the top of Sabbath Lake! You can see the radio tower over there… see? And over there,” he spun around to point out the back window, where the water was bright and translucent. “That’s Apollyon Forest. The Sheriff’s cabin is just at the base of those trees.”

“You’re right!” Hank yelled, voice quivering with relief. “Guys, we’re at the lake. It makes no sense, but we are. I don’t know what the hell’s happening, but I wanna go home. We’re so close, we can easily get out and swim from here.”

Foster looked up through the windshield at watery blue sky, tinted darker by dusk, but there nonetheless, only a few feet away. “I agree. We’re close to the top…”

He was about to say they should go for it, but he could already hear the Parker brothers jiggling door handles, beating their hands against the padded doors. Next to him, Tom was working at his own door handle, pushing and pulling it madly. “We never tried mine,” he said, his previously hopeful tone now sounding somewhat hysterical. “Mine could work, it could work,” he mumbled as he breathlessly worked the handle.

Tom was about to try his door again, but when he turned toward the driver’s side window he stopped, staring in wonder at the wall of water pushing against the invisible barrier.
