Kabila’s Wilderness Years

Much later, when Kabila was in power, Guevara’s posthumously published diary carried an unflattering portrait. Kabila was judged to have the ‘genuine qualities of a mass leader’, but lacked ‘revolutionary seriousness, an ideology that can guide action, a spirit of sacrifice that accompanies one’s action’ (qualities that Guevara certainly saw in himself). ‘I have grave doubts’, the report card concluded, ‘about his ability to overcome his defects in the environment in which he operates.’ Another Cuban observed of Kabila that, with such leaders, ‘Africa can expect to have long centuries of slavery and colonialism’.29 Godefrei Tchamlesso, who was close to Kabila at this time and later emigrated to Cuba, had a similar assessment. He never questioned Kabila’s revolutionary credentials or his ‘capacity as a leader’. He was, however, ‘looking for a soft billet, and he didn’t have enough – any, in fact – military experience’. He was an ‘agitator’ who

lacked the seriousness, the self-assurance, the knowledge and the innate talent you can see in a Fidel and that you can see in other leaders, who headed the guerrilla force … He was more of a politician who knew about urban insurrections and how to conspire in the streets.30
