Kabilaâs Wilderness Years
Much later, when Kabila was in power, Guevaraâs posthumously published diary carried an unflattering portrait. Kabila was judged to have the âgenuine qualities of a mass leaderâ, but lacked ârevolutionary seriousness, an ideology that can guide action, a spirit of sacrifice that accompanies oneâs actionâ (qualities that Guevara certainly saw in himself). âI have grave doubtsâ, the report card concluded, âabout his ability to overcome his defects in the environment in which he operates.â Another Cuban observed of Kabila that, with such leaders, âAfrica can expect to have long centuries of slavery and colonialismâ.29 Godefrei Tchamlesso, who was close to Kabila at this time and later emigrated to Cuba, had a similar assessment. He never questioned Kabilaâs revolutionary credentials or his âcapacity as a leaderâ. He was, however, âlooking for a soft billet, and he didnât have enough â any, in fact â military experienceâ. He was an âagitatorâ who
lacked the seriousness, the self-assurance, the knowledge and the innate talent you can see in a Fidel and that you can see in other leaders, who headed the guerrilla force ⦠He was more of a politician who knew about urban insurrections and how to conspire in the streets.30
