STEPHEN MERCHANT
ACTOR, COMEDIAN, DIRECTOR, RADIO HOST, WRITER
b. November 24, 1974, Bristol, England
Stephen Merchant met Ricky Gervais, his future collaborator on the comedy television shows The Office and Extras, when he was hired as Gervais’s assistant at London-based radio station Xfm in 1997. The concept for the comedy-drama The Office stemmed from a short film Merchant made with Gervais while on a production course at the BBC. The Office went on air in 2001 and won a plethora of awards, including an Emmy, a Golden Globe, three BAFTA Awards, and two British Comedy Awards, with Merchant and Gervais sharing the British Comedy Award for Writer of the Year in 2004. For his performance in the duo’s next sitcom, Extras, Merchant was honored with a British Comedy Award for Best TV Comedy Actor in 2006, with the show itself winning a Golden Globe in 2008. Merchant was one of the presenters of the The Ricky Gervais Show, which became the most downloaded podcast in the world.
