“No, it does! Baking is like that for me. Or it used to be at least.”

“Used to be?”

Comet sighed. She looked at Twilight for a long time before deciding she couldn’t keep it to herself any longer. “Can you keep a secret?”

“Um, I think so.”

That was good enough for Comet. “I entered a baking competition against Glitterhorn. It’s right after the hoofball match tomorrow. Stella and Celest have been giving me extra lessons.” She looked at Twilight out of the corner of her eye, worried about what she would say.

“You’re the best baker I know! You’ll win for sure.”

Comet smiled. “Well… if I do win, I get to compete in another round against kids from all over the five kingdoms. I can even bring three friends with me.”

Twilight’s eyes sparkled. “That would be amazing. And, you know, Sapphire has always wanted to travel. She would love to hear about this.”

Comet shook her head. “No way. I think she cares more about hoofball right now than anything else. And she is already annoyed with me.”

“But you’ve been practicing for hoofball every day!”

“And baking every morning before school, but I’m worried I’m getting worse at both. Yesterday I accidently made an explosion by mixing baking powder with some wrong ingredients. Then later at hoofball practice, I couldn’t even get my hoof to hit the ball!” Comet took a breath. She had been trying so hard to bottle all these feelings up, and now they were bursting out. Kinda like my baking fail yesterday, she thought. “I feel like I’m lying to everyone. Especially Sapphire. What would she say?”

Twilight paused to think. She always chose her words wisely. Comet admired that about her. For Comet, words tumbled out of her mouth like apples from a ripped bag.

“She knows how much you love baking,” Twilight finally said. “And I think she would love the chance to travel somewhere. She might not be completely happy at first, but I think she’d understand and be excited in the end.”

Comet considered this as she stared at Twilight’s beautiful painting. It was calming. Feeling a little better, Comet thought, Twilight’s right. How could Sapphire be mad if I won the hoofball match and the baking prize? She just had to win. Then she could tell Sapphire everything. “You’re right. I can’t let her down. Not in the hoofball game. And not with the baking prize.”

“Comet, I didn’t mean—”

But the final class bell interrupted her and reminded Comet where she was supposed to be.

“Oh no! I’m going to be late for practice. Thanks for talking with me, Twilight. This really helped. I just need to focus and do this. For Sapphire! For Unicorn University!”

“That’s not really what I meant….”

But Comet was already a rose-colored blur shooting toward the fields.
