Chapter 9

KHAN’S QUEST

He was dozing again. His eyelids fluttered open to the half-light of the early summer evening, a siren sounded, moving away from his position. When he was young, growing up in the city he had heard many sirens, so many that he had grown accustomed to hearing them. Not so anymore, this siren snapped him fully awake, his eyes blinked once, twice, then adjusted to the darkening afternoon, his clear brown eyes focused, sharp, penetrating. The eyes of a hunter. Or a soldier. Though he may think otherwise he had been both. Done things in his life- a life not young by some standards yet not old by others- things for survival, want, or the appeasement of others. The things he had done for survival he had never thought twice about, it was done for life- simple. The things he had done for want were not much more cause for wonder, as his wants were not all that complicated. However it seemed from his earliest memories he had been trying to appease others and had mostly failed miserably at it. He cast his eyes down, remembering just what he had done to the bad man. His chest hurt as well when he thought about the man, but that pain was his shame and he knew it, not a physical injury like his hip or the shoulder, because the man was bad and he was good. He knew deep down in his heart that he was good, and it was not just because the girl-child had told him that he was so long ago, but mostly because of his dreams. Even as a young one living in the big house on the hill he’d had incredibly vivid and colourful dreams, these dreams continued throughout the many passing days and nights that comprised his life up to this sad, sorry point. It was these same dreams that set him on this current path, this journey of wonders that may possibly end with his passing. These very dreams that had finally caused him to rise up and kill the man, Blakey thereby sacrificing the relative safety of a home, such as it was, and becoming a fugitive from the men in the uniforms. These dreams that bade him onward, ever onward, the dreams and that strange pull that called out to him somewhere in the distance. It had been three days since he’d run away from the great, stinking city, where he had lived his whole life. So much he understood now, but so much remained a mystery. He had no idea where he was at the moment, had no clue as to how far he’d already travelled and really didn’t know how far he still had to go. All he knew for sure was where he was going. Even as he watched a butterfly land on a bush beside where he sat and contemplated eating it, Khan could feel his destination pulling at him, the way a magnet draws metal. It was going to be a long journey, but at least getting lost was not going to be a concern.
