ELEVEN
Two hours later, Celia and her family finally arrived back at the house. She had enjoyed herself so much tonight, and Nash was the reason. He had pulled out a splendid performance of a man besotted on his soon-to-be bride. She just prayed that someday he wouldnât have to pretend with her.
Father and Thomas left her and Nash alone outside, which surprised her. Then again, her father didnât have anything to worry about now that he was making Nash marry her. Nonetheless, she was grateful to be alone with him once again.
They walked side by side away from the house. She wanted to hook her hand around his arm but didnât dare. But strolling this way in silence would drive her insane.
âI had a lovely evening,â she said.
He met her gaze and nodded. âI did, too.â
âI apologize that the evening started out rocky, but Iâm very happy that it ended wonderfully.â
âI suppose Iâm to blame for that.â He sighed and stopped. âI honestly didnât know Mrs. Livingston would be there, and it was very insensitive of me to talk to her.â
âBut didnât you tell me that she came to you?â
âYes.â
âWell, it would have been rude to shun her.â
âTrue, but I would rather her be upset with me than you.â He took her hands in his and gently rubbed her knuckles.
âWill you now tell me what she was so persistent about?â
He inhaled deeply and released it slowly. The smile faded from his face. Immediately, Celia braced herself, fearing that she wouldnât be happy with the outcome.
âThe reason she wanted to speak with me after the ball last night was that she wanted to propose to me.â
Celia gasped. âPropose? Like in marrying you?â
âYes.â
Anger rose inside of her, but so did humor, and she laughed. âWhy would a woman like her want to settle down?â
He shrugged. âCandace told me she was tired of all of the men in her life, and she wanted just one. Because we had parted friends, she wanted to marry someone she liked more than the others.â Nash hooked her hand around his elbow and slowly led them toward the house. âSheâd heard of my situation and that I was low on funds, and so her proposal was similar to yours.â He smiled down at Celia. âIt shocked her when I told her that I couldnât possibly marry her because I was going to marry you.â
Celia hadnât realized sheâd been holding her breath until she released the air in one big gush between her teeth. Happiness danced in her chest. âYou told her that?â
âYes. After all, in a few days, it wonât be a secret any longer. Correct?â
âMy father plans on making the announcement soon.â She stopped them and rested her hands on his chest. âNash, tell me why you have had a sudden change of mind about me.â
His eyes widened. âWhy would you think that? You know I like you.â
âTrue, but I also know you were not looking forward to our wedding.â
His gaze narrowed on her. âHave you had a change of mind about our wedding?â He stroked her cheek.
