FINN

I feel fucking amazing today. Even though I slept on the couch, I slept better than I have in months. Waking up with Shayna sprawled over me has a lot to do with it, I suspect. Being with this woman is something I’m quickly getting used to. Which surprises me. After Britney, I swore off relationships, but now I’m wondering if that’s the right choice.

Shay is in her glory. I’m following her around like a puppy dog, tugging the cart behind me. We already have a full one waiting up near the checkout.

She strolls leisurely through the aisles, her eyes darting around. It’s obvious the moment she finds the treasure she was hunting for as she kicks up her pace and walks straight toward a collection of plants with fleshy green leaves and mauve colored flowers.

“I’ve been looking for you babies,” Shayna says, cooing at the plants. She looks over her shoulder at me, smiling. “Finn, check sedum off the list.”

I smile back at her, then mime making a check mark in the air. “Got it.”

“Can you read me what you’ve checked so far? I want to be sure we aren’t missing anything.” She’s turned to face me now and looks stunning in the natural light, a gleam in her eye and a giant smile on her face—she’s radiating joy here in her happy place.

“Sure thing, boss.”

She narrows her eyes at me for a second, and I can’t help but grin.

“Okay, we’ve got hydrangea, lavender, coneflower, sedum, milkweed, and bee balm.”

“Good. I think all we need are some ferns, and we’re set. Isn’t this so exciting?”

She squeezes my arm and then takes off, looking for ferns, I presume, before I can answer.

Shayna’s a smidge bossy right now—in the hottest way—right down to insisting she decides which cart each plant goes on, the one she’s pulling or the one I am.

On the way to the ferns, she fills her cart with more lavender, spotted dead nettle, calla lilies, and one white rose bush. I don’t know the names of half of these plants, but she adorably attempts to educate me about each one as she picks them up.

Finally, after an hour, Shayna declares we have everything we need, and we make our way toward the checkout. Then she stops so suddenly I almost run into the back of her.

“Ooh, hold on a minute, I want to check out the fountains…not to buy today. I’m watching the one called eternal loop that I’m considering for my memory garden.”

She smiles.

I follow her as she makes her way over to the section with the stone fountains, and she walks up to one with purpose in her stride. She stands and watches it for a minute as the water flows on a continuous loop. I have to admit, it’s mesmerizing and peaceful. She kneels and grimaces as she looks at the price. Standing back up, she makes her way over to me, smiling.

“I’m ready if you are! Let’s get this show on the road so we can get home and get dirty.
