I was wrong about so many things, and now Iâm not sure where to go from here. - unsent text message from Liam to Kennedy

I wasnât sure of the proper etiquette for getting coffee with an ex who Iâd spent years hating in a way that was apparently unfounded, and whom I maybe wanted to date again. Maybe. I wasnât committing to that. With how mixed my feelings were, I wasnât even sure I should have suggested coffee, but if Iâd allowed a few more days to pass, weâd have been caught up in the New Yearâs Eve rush, and I wouldnât have had a free second. So while this wasnât ideal, it was the best of the options available.
I pulled up outside Taste of Destiny, glancing around to see if Kennedyâs Outback was already parked nearby. When I didnât see anything, I locked my Ute and headed in. This early in the day, the morning rush hadnât yet begun, so I spotted Kennedy in the corner as soon as I entered. She was sitting on her own, reading the newspaper with a coffee at her elbow. I greeted Eden with a nod and made my way over to join Kennedy.
She looked up, and her features creased into a smile that looked as uncertain and hesitant as mine. âHi.â
Butterflies fluttered in my stomach. I grimaced at the realization this felt like a first date.
âHello.â I sank into the chair opposite her and waited while she closed the newspaper and set it aside. I scanned her face for evidence sheâd spent more time crying and was pleased to see she looked back to normal. âHow are you today?â
âIâm good. And you?â
âGood too.â I interlaced my fingers to stop myself from fidgeting. Damn, this was awkward. I searched around for something to talk about. âSo, how long has Blair been in town?â
She gave me a look. âHe just arrived yesterday.â
Ah. Yeah. Of course he had. Because on the weekend, he hadnât been around while Iâd installed the extra security, and he sure as hell hadnât been there on Christmas.
âWas it a planned visit?â
âNo. Heâs worried about me.â
I nodded. As he should be. Iâd been worried even when Iâd told myself I should hate her guts.
âOne of his friends should be arriving soon,â she added. âTyler. Apparently he agreed to join Blair in New Zealand, but wanted to drop by Australia to visit some friends first.â
âHuh.â My chest burned at the thought that Blair had felt the need to call in reinforcements. It was good that he was looking out for her, but no other guy could protect her the way he and I would. âHave you met Tyler before?â
âOf course.â Her smile was a little too fond for my liking. âHe and Blair have been close for quite a few years, so weâve spent a lot of time together. I havenât seen much of him recently though.â
âOh?â Why did that please me more than it should? I shouldnât be getting possessive over a woman Iâd done my best to leave in the past.
