Chloe burst onto the street behind Piper, both of them breathless after their dash up the stairs. She hadn’t realized how stuffy the subway was until she was out of it, sucking in fresh air as she tugged Piper against her for a hug. “You did it.”

“I did,” Piper gasped, the first words she’d spoken since before they descended to the platform over fifteen minutes ago.

“How do you feel?”

“Shaky,” Piper said quietly.

“And emotionally?”

“I’m okay.” Piper nodded against Chloe’s cheek. “I just need a minute.”

“Take as long as you need.” Chloe could stand here with her all night, arms wrapped snugly around Piper, bursting with pride at the way she’d pushed through her fear to get on that train.

After a few minutes, Piper’s gasping breaths slowed, and she rested her forehead against Chloe’s shoulder. Beneath her fingers, Chloe felt the tension drain out of Piper, muscles that had been bunched tight gradually softening. Chloe rubbed a hand up and down her back, and Piper burrowed closer against her, letting out a sigh that sounded like relief.

“I’m so proud of you,” Chloe whispered.

Piper raised her head, giving Chloe a hesitant smile. “It’s not over for me, but it’ll be easier next time, I think.”

“Yes. So that was really the last thing on your list?”

“It was. Now I just have to keep doing these things until the fear is gone.”

“That’s badass, Piper.” Chloe dipped her head, pressing her lips to Piper’s. Their kiss was gentle and tender, seeking comfort, not heat. Later, they’d share a different kind of kiss, the kind Chloe had been dreaming about all week, but not here on a public street after Piper had just ridden the subway for the first time in months to bring them to the bar where they’d met.

They had some celebrating to do before they got naked.

Piper stepped back, reaching up to tug the wig from her head. She rolled it into a ball and shoved it into her purse before fluffing her hair. Chloe reached out to smooth down a wayward strand that had gone rogue under the wig. And before her eyes, the Mystery Woman became her Piper.

Her Piper. Where did that come from?

“Come on,” Piper said. “I’m ready for that drink.”

“Me too.” Actually, she was parched after their subway ride, and Piper had to be too.

They walked leisurely down the street, but Chloe felt the tremor in Piper’s hand. No doubt, she was experiencing aftereffects from her anxiety and all the adrenaline it had released into her body. Chloe had done a little research about panic attacks after meeting Piper, just to better understand what she was dealing with and how to help. She had a lot of ideas to help relax her once they got back to the apartment…

After walking a few blocks, they arrived at Dragonfly, the adorable little gay bar where they’d met exactly four weeks ago. Chloe could hardly wrap her mind around all the ways her life had changed since then. The bar’s lavender logo gleamed
