FIRST AID

Inevitably, you’ll suffer some training injuries. Remember I told you about the irreverent T-shirts? One year, I put “My Lifestyle Hurts” on the front of our shirts. On the back was a longitudinally-oriented, huge orange caplet (an 800mg Motrin) with the caption, “Motrin is my friend.”

My opinion is that it’s good to be sore after a hard workout. It’s good to have some deep-tissue bruising and to know you can handle some pain and endure it. It’s also a pleasant reminder that somewhere, the poor bastard who may attack you is NOT training nearly as hard as you—if at all.

Having a basic knowledge of first aid is just smart if you’re training hard. Knowing when to suck it up and when to go see the doc is important. It may be the difference between being able to continue training or having to sit out a week because you didn’t.

Similarly, it’s everyone’s personal responsibility to practice good hygiene. You don’t want to sling snot and spit everywhere or release blood-borne pathogens all over the training venue and each other. It’s everyone’s responsibility to not spread the flu or the common cold to their training partners. If you’re sick, DON’T COME TO TRAINING.
