“You’re not planning on leaving already, are you?” Jones asked, thinking it would be bad enough, being forced to wait in silence, unable to speak a word of this while the investigation slowly dragged on, but doing so without her guidance would qualify as a torture. While she might argue that she had fulfilled her contract with him by finding two suspects and turning their names over to authorities, he needed more, much more to bring him the closure he’d imagined.

“It’s an option,” she admitted, “and one that could save you quite a lot of money, if you want to let the authorities take it from here.”

“And if I don’t?” he asked, his gut contracting at the thought of losing his direct link to the investigation so soon. Or maybe it was the idea of losing touch with Allie herself that scared him most—especially since he feared that, because of the threats against her, she would disappear to someplace where he’d never again be able to make contact. As the reality of it hit him, he quickly added, “Because costs be damned. I definitely don’t want you leaving yet, not until we—”

The chiming of his cell phone interrupted. Grimacing, he said, “I’d better check this. Carly’s supposed to be dropping off some things I asked her to bring over for your new look.”

Allie nodded. “That’d be perfect—and even better if I got the chance to thank her in person for all her help.”

After reading the text, which was indeed from Carly, Jones said, “She couldn’t stay, I’m afraid. Apparently, she has some appointment across town, but she dropped off the bag with Gina—that’s the waitress on duty—who said she’d run it back here to the office as soon as she gets a minute.”

“Oh, okay,” said Allie before a jingling tone had her turning to look at her tablet computer. “Oooh, yes! I’ve got a bite.”

“A bite?” he asked. “What exactly are you up to?”

“A little fishing expedition,” she said.

She turned the screen to show him a photo of the sneering face of the younger man Jones recognized as Leo Styler, which was connected to a cartoon-style speech balloon containing the message he had just sent Allie: Hey there, Sexy Lexi! Next time you see me over there, say hi and I’ll def buy you a smoothie or whatever. Especially if you’ve got that vest on.

Accompanying the message, he sent an icon featuring a lecherous cartoon wolf with drool dripping from his unspooling tongue.

“You—you’re trying to meet up with this guy?” Jones demanded, his heart battering his rib cage. “And what on earth’s this Sexy Lexi—”

A tiny bomb icon in the upper right-hand corner of the screen counted down 3, 2, 1 before an explosive sound effect heralded the disappearance of the message.

“What happened? Where’d the message go?” Jones asked, more confused than ever.

Allie explained the nature of the app. “I set the timer for as long as possible, but the whole point is not to leave any kind of trail.
