Eve got some clothes on and they took the coffees into the living-room. Regan was there watching TV. He was looking at the morning news-show and had a hand covering his bandaged wrist, bless him. Like Marlene might-of-sort-of-kinda forgotten what happened. And in a way she had. Because the nightmare of Evil Chick and the old lady room had been so much worse...

Marlene glanced at the screen.

A boat, its image captioned as US Navy footage. A scary narrative growing around these scenes teleported to their sunny morning room. Grainy image with the shapes of Russian commandos on the deck of the boat - some kind of a freighter. “Live from the Mediterranean” flashed up, then the segment cut to the White House press-room, the Chief of Staff taking the podium, clearing his throat in the camera flash-flicker. The onscreen graphics switched between a biotoxin symbol and an archive picture of Rome. The Chief of Staff was now looking at Marlene the same way as that Trooper in the diner. It was a look that breached lines of privilege, influence and legality just to make her feel bad - chapter one and the opening page of a world Marlene really did not want to know about.

Biotox. The Coliseum with the traffic all frozen around it.

Something kicked inside Marlene.

Rome - what about London?

It wasn’t just one boat. It was two boats... it was Hezbollah, who Marlene knew from reading USA Today, liked the co-ordinated multi-hit and had cash to burn. It was many boats, all the boats - all the boats and all the bombs.

Now fully panicked, Marlene glanced to Eve - she needed internet access and fast - to talk to James Seymour of the DEA. Why the DEA? Because the CIA and the Feds were probably all in on it...

She glanced to Eve and saw Chick - who’d left for work a few minutes ago - now being marched backwards into the sun-splashed room with a cop’s gun in his face and a cop’s gloved hand around his neck. Would this be a fast-track to the DEA? Forget it! Marlene saw the movies, read USA Today, and knew the agencies most never talked to one another. Get pinched now and that was Jimmy Seymour hung out in the breeze - and London, FORGET IT! Meanwhile, the cop was yelling about what Marlene knew had to be drugs, and Eve was screaming like anyone actually gave a shit. Meanwhile Regan was stood behind the door, arms raised above his head, ready to hit the cop with Eve’s tombstone-sized book on pinball art.

At this, Marlene was like - omigod!

Then Regan did it, brought down those righteous stone tablets high from the mountain-top and slammed that copper but good.

Chick jumped aside and a shot from the polaxed cop blew out the TV screen.

Second and third shots from another weapon hit the first cop and punched a big hole in the door.

Regan made a grab through the cratered door and yanked the second, unseen cop so hard - one, twice, the door came off its hinges and Regan had to skip back to dodge the fall.
