Somewhere in Colombia
Tiny fists banged on the wooden door while hard shoes whacked the bottom. “Let us out! Open the door and I’ll—”
“Silvina, please stop.” Maria sat on the bed, watching her sister’s antics. “Remember what happened last time?”
“The coati man came in, and I kicked him in the shins.” Silvina grinned.
“Sí, and he threw you across the room.”
“True, but he was limping when he left.” Silvina ran and jumped on the bed. “I’m bored. There’s nothing to do.” She waved her hands in the air. “He brought us coloring books and crayons!” She crossed her arms. “As if! I’m almost nine, and you’ll be eleven soon.”
“He promised to bring some DVDs and a DVD player, too.”
Silvina rolled her eyes. “Why doesn’t he just return us to Mamá? Sooner or later, she’ll find us—and he’ll be sorry!” She slid off the bed and went to the window. “Too dark outside. I can’t see anything.”
“At least Valentina opened the shutters outside so we can look out during the day.” Maria’s stomach growled. “I’m hungry. I hope someone brings us something to eat before I starve. Like hamburgers from Hamburguesas El Corral.”
“Ugh.” Silvina turned to Maria and stuck a finger in her throat. “Last time they were cold. Anyway, too much beef isn’t healthy—Mamá says so.”
“You complained, but you ate two of them.” Maria’s brows knitted into a frown.
“That’s all they brought, and I was hungry.” Silvina stuck out her tongue. “I’d rather eat vegetables.”
“Are you trying to make me sick? Why—”
Silvina stomped her feet in a mild temper tantrum as something bumped against the door. “Shush.”
A key jiggled in the lock, and the bolt slid back with a loud snick. Someone pushed against the door, and it squeaked as it opened. A man wearing a balaclava entered, followed by a woman in her early twenties with long, black hair. Once inside, he shoved the door closed.
He gestured for the woman to place the package she carried on the dresser next to the television. He turned to the girls. “Time for dinner—whether you enjoy it or not makes no difference to me. If you don’t eat, you’ll go hungry until tomorrow morning.”
“When will you let us go home?” Silvina glared at him. “You’ve kept us here for ages.” She stuck her nose in the air. “Free us, and I’ll ask Mamá not to kill you.”
The man raised a hand and stepped forward. “Quiet! It’s your fault I locked you in this room. You shouldn’t have tried to escape.”
“What do you expect? You didn’t ask us if we wanted to come here.” Silvina pointed to Maria. “My sister is afraid of you—but I’m not.”
“Sí. I remember when I was in your hacienda, and you hit me with your tennis racket. Very courageous, but not too smart.”
Silvina stuck out her tongue. “Smarter than you. Bet you didn’t even finish elementary school.”
The man shook his head in exasperation, his chin jutting out. “Do you have an answer for everything?”
“That’s what my mamá and my teachers say.
