PERSONAL EXPERIENCE AND DEVELOPMENT

An individual’s behaviour in a team or group is determined by a complex mix of influences that are at the same time historical (background experience), current (life circumstances) and immediate (what’s happening in the here and now). A key influence is the person’s life experience and learned behaviours. Teams in organisations resemble to some extent family units, with the grandparents (senior managers), parent (team leader) and siblings (close colleagues). Family as well as school experiences and behaviours learned in these contexts are often background influences in teams. Effectiveness in a team context can be learned through experience and training at any stage of a person’s life, but this can be helped or hindered by our experiences in a family and school context from an early age.
