In the morning we drove to the town of Shaver Lake, Anneliese had asked her two Fresno –based people to come to us for a U.S Imports meeting, early evening.

We booked into an innocuous motel in the main street. Across the road was a small restaurant/bar and next to it a shop. This was about all there was in the town.

The motel could have been modelled on the film Psycho. The rooms were the typical one-storey building and set back from it was a large dark detached house. As we drove up, an old man was sitting on a rocking chair on the porch. As we stopped, he stood up, beer can in hand and began to stagger over to us. We had a quick polite chat with him and booked into two rooms. Anneliese asked if we could reserve other rooms later to accommodate her staff, if they wanted.

The man laughed and said “of course sweetie, the whole place is empty and available”.

Later on, the three of us went across the road to the restaurant. A lady with glowing red cheeks came to our table to take our orders. We asked for a bit more time as we hadn’t even got to looking at the menu. However, when we did, it didn’t require much thought. It was mainly basics like omelettes, burgers, fries, eggs, bacon and pancakes.

When she returned, the first thing she said with a real warm glow was “welcome to Papa Bears”. We ordered several items, agreeing to share, as we were all starving hungry.

Just before we left, Anneliese asked if we could come back for an evening meal and what was the earliest time. Apparently six o’clock seemed best. She, by name Shelley, went on to explain that if we liked music the woodsmen and loggers would be in about 8.00pm for a jam session. And they were coming down from the forests to get haircuts from a local barber. “ It only happens every six months or so” she said. “Don’t be put off by the way they look. They are great guys who always make my customers welcome”.

During the afternoon, I had a little walk around with Anneliese, then a rest. Frank knocked on our door just as we were ready to go to Papa Bears. We arrived and were seated about 6.15pm. Anneliese reported that her two guys from Fresno would be arriving about 7.00pm. Their names were Gerry and Tony.

The waitress, Shelley, brought us some local beers, just bottles, no glasses. Of course, the beers brewery name had to be Big Foot Beer! I was really enjoying it as we had not been allowed beer whilst in training.

Anneliese grabbed my wrist and said that I would feel at home with Gerry and Tony as they were both English. I replied “so what are they doing working here for you?” “Well” she said “they are both high intellect chaps that I hired straight out of Oxford University They have succeeded in every element of training and have proved to be very accomplished.
