CHAPTER THIRTEEN
Min-seo Geum came clean that sheâd known that âVeronica Mooneâ was a CIA non-official cover, and that she herself was a member of South Koreaâs National Intelligence Service, also in NOC as a fellow teacher. The two had first become friends and coworkers. Both had kept in touch, eventually developing a very close relationship⦠She was numb and still trying to process Mooneâs death.
Geum assumed that the two menâGary Manning and T. J. Hawkinsâwere CIA operatives, most likely some form of wet works or black ops team. She said as much, but neither member of Phoenix Force had been inclined to disabuse her of that notion.
She also seemed nervous to give the truth about her affection for the deceased woman, worried that the two stone-cold killers might decide to eliminate her, especially if sheâd somehow been trying to pump Moone for information.
âDonât worry about us.â Manning consoled her. âWe honestly donât care. She gathered intel and we vetted that she didnât give up any secrets.â
That much was true, Hawkins admitted to himself. Moone had been a good agent, and what notes sheâd gathered had showed that Geum had been of phenomenal assistance in picking up snippets of information. They had both been working at a school to educate members of an electronics firm in better English speaking and writing. Through their combined investigations, theyâd discovered some very unusual happenings at the electronics company.
In her off time Moone had looked into the books and had flagged multiple inventory discrepancies, as well as pulled together various obituaries of members of the electronics firm whoâd died in unusual accidents. The Farm was digging into all of this information back home, but Manning, Hawkins and Geum were working together on the patterns of activity.
Even as Manning and Geum looked over the notes, drawing up clues on a whiteboard, Hawkins took a few moments to open the gear cases left in the safe house. They had come in low-profile, which meant they hadnât had the ability to sweep their usual Pelican gun cases past customs. There was still a possibility that Japan did have some form of involvement with the ship sinkings; a form of very public self-victimization to polarize the world to its point of view for some reason.
The Diplomatic Security Service, however, had been informed of the arrival of the two Stony Man operatives and aside from this safe house, had left some care packages for the Phoenix Force members.
As soon as theyâd returned to the safe house, the first thing Manning had done after securing their prisoners and the perimeter, was open one of the cases. Heâd been pleased to find a Smith & Wesson M-19 in .357 Magnum. After all, he was a woodsman with an appreciation for hunting cartridges. The Canadian had quickly donned a shoulder holster for the sleek six-gun.
The DSS had also provided a quartet of Glock 19s, which had left a spare pistol for Geum. The Glock 19 was a worldwide standard of reliability and accuracy.
