LILY WAS OUT on her front porch directing an orchestra of law enforcement from the comfort of a dining room chair and her cell phone. Ant had brought it out when she’d insisted he stay inside and keep Winnie company.

“If she’s comfortable with dogs, let Cook back in,” Lily had told him, Kenneth’s line already ringing in her ear. “He’ll help her as long as you’re friendly with her.”

Ant hadn’t questioned a thing.

Then Lily was bouncing between calls.

The first was with Kenneth and, after him initially reminding her that she was off duty for recovery, he paid rapt attention to what she had to say. A missing person was never a happy thing; a missing woman in Kelby Creek had become a lot more common than it should have been.

“She hasn’t been missing an entire day yet,” he pointed out, playing the devil’s advocate. Lily knew it was necessary but she couldn’t hold back the sharpness in her words when she replied.

“A twenty-year-old woman in a secret relationship gets into a car that matches the description of one driven by a person who set fire to a meth lab that has ties to both Arturo and Bryant. One of whom is in jail for assault on an officer after finding a buried box with a recording of a potential original tape of Annie McHale screaming during her ransom video. The other, a man I’ve been trying to find to question about the abduction of a sixteen year-old girl, fourteen years ago. I don’t know about you but those sentences are so thick with suspicion I almost couldn’t get them out.”

“I’m not questioning how suspicious this all looks. I’m simply reminding you that, as you yourself just said, Arturo is in custody,” Kenneth returned. “He’s been there since Monday night. Kris entered the Cadillac yesterday, Wednesday night. We can work with theories but we need to also work with what we really have too.”

Lily was hot under her metaphorical collar.

And she hadn’t realized it until now.

Her emotions were twisting around her words, balling her hands into fists, clenching her teeth when she wasn’t speaking.

She followed her own advice and took a quick but deep breath.

Throw the switch back to Off, she told herself. Do what you’re good at.

“Well, with what we have I’d have Juliet keep looking for Bryant Lautner, you can keep looking into the recording and its connection to Annie McHale, and Foster can keep trying to find that car and go through the current narcotics scene in Kelby Creek for more information on the meth lab and suppliers who might know who was using it. I’d put Detective Reiner on Kristine Cho since he has a knack for finding people. Best case is she’s with a married man and lost track of time.”

“And what about you?” he asked.

Lily glanced at Winnie’s car parked at the curb.

She pictured her blue door several streets away.

“I’m off duty, remember?”

Kenneth gave her the kindness of not prodding further and promised to keep her updated if and when they found something.
