CHAPTER 15

Logan

The next morning, I wake up with an uneasy feeling. I jump out of bed and check on Delaney. She’s sleeping. I then check on Duke, but his room is empty. He’s not in the kitchen. I search every inch of the place and can’t find him. I call out his name.

Delaney appears in the hall, her hair messed up and her eyes barely open. “What’s going on?”

My eyes take her in. She’s only wearing a T-shirt that clings to her body, leaving nothing to the imagination. Not that it would need to because I remember every inch of her.

“Logan?”

I cough, giving myself a minute to refocus. I can’t keep letting thoughts of her distract me like this. “I can’t find Duke.”

Her eyes widen, and she helps me search. I go to the garage, hoping I’m wrong. But I’m not. There is always a car in this garage for anyone who needs it. I’ve used this place as a hideout before, so I’m well aware of what should be here.

Delaney finds me. “What’s going on?”

“The car is gone. How the hell would he have started it without keys?”

When we arrived, I placed the keys in my pocket for safekeeping, and they are still there.

“You’re kidding, right?” she asks.

Then I realize, I forgot who I was talking to. Of course, he knows how to get a car going without keys.

But how did I not hear him leave last night? I stare at the gravel. He must have driven very slowly over that.

Once I get back inside, I grab my phone.

“Reed Hawthorne Security,” Piper answers.

“Hey, it’s Coff. Can you connect me to Reed?”

“Sure can.”

That’s one thing I’m grateful about Piper. She knows when to skip the small talk and just connect me.

“Coff, what’s going on?”

“Duke took the car and is gone. The last thing he said was he’d be better off with Nelson dead.”

“You think he is going after Nelson?” Reed asks.

“I do. But I’m also concerned he may have compromised our location.”

Delaney steps into the living room to join me. Thankfully, she’s fully clothed now. She hugs herself, and I want to comfort her, but I have to keep her at a distance so I can remain focused.

“I’ll send someone to pick you two up. You’ll come back here until we figure out plan B.”

“Sounds good. We’ll be ready.”

I end the call. “We should eat. One of my coworkers will be picking us up in about an hour.

Tears well in her eyes. “Duke is going after Nelson, isn’t he?”

“I think so.”

“Dammit. He’s going to get himself killed.” She sniffles, and that’s my undoing.

I wrap my arms around her, and she sinks into my body. As she sobs, I rub her back. “We’ll find him. But in the meantime, we’re going to go back to my office until we can find a new safe place.”

She nods against my chest. A memory from years ago flashes through my mind. We’d spent the entire day in bed and had gotten up to get something to eat.
