CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

It was only a short walk before another door appeared, this time on the opposite side of the street. Once again, the Road Closed sign offered an unsubtle incentive to use the door. Voltaic stared at it as her systems attempted to discern what might lie behind, but when that availed her nothing, she marshaled her courage and stepped through.

The seamless transition took her from the studio lot into a huge two-level Japanese tea house rendered in black and white. Her clothes were also monochrome. Tables covered the first level, and twin staircases on opposite sides of the room led up to the balcony level, where a dark wood walkway gave access to shoji-covered private rooms.

The first floor was filled to capacity, every seat occupied by athletic-looking men in black trousers and white shirts. Her hand strayed to her belt and rested upon the cylinder that would become her sword. She recognized the film's setting as one of Tarantino’s best and bloodiest.

The room’s sudden eruption into motion did not surprise her. She yanked the cylinder out and pressed the button to extend the sword from it. She ran to her right to claim the protection of a corner, but her enemies reached her first. They rushed in, every person holding a sword or a pair of swords, yelling, shouting, and chopping.

Her arms blurred as she wielded her sword two-handed, focusing primarily on blocking but counterattacking with a riposte when her enemies afforded her the opportunity. Her body operated on automatic as her mind processed the scene and looked for any way to turn things to her advantage.

The status quo couldn’t last. There were too many of them for her to win a war of attrition, which meant she had to take the offensive. Doing that meant getting out of the current press.

Voltaic made a running leap onto the top of the nearest table and jumped for the balcony around the room. In the real world, she would have never made the jump. This simulation was of a martial arts film shot with wires to allow the actors to do superhuman feats, so the physics were inherently manipulable if you had the skill. Voltaic did.

She landed cleanly on the railing and leapt over the men on the balcony who had started slashing at her before she arrived. She hit the floor behind them and whipped in a circle with her blade extended horizontal to the floor. Heads neatly separated from bodies and fell onto the main floor as the rest of her dead opponents littered the balcony.

She ran because staying in one place was a recipe for a quick death.

The balcony offered a more organized combat area, and she raced to the head of the stairs to deal with those charging up them. The first person received a front kick in the face. He fell back into those behind him, creating a domino effect that cleared the area and would have been funny if not for the huge number of remaining opponents.
